Three Things Pug Owners Need To Know About Corneal Scratches

Pugs are a popular breed of dog, but like other short-faced dogs, they are at risk of a variety of health problems. Corneal scratches are one of the problems that your pug could develop. Here are three things pug owners need to know about corneal scratches.

What are corneal scratches?

The cornea is the clear outer layer of the front of the eye, and this tissue can become scratched. If your pug scratches their cornea, you may see that they're pawing at their injured eye. One of their eyes may also look swollen or sore. When you examine the eye, you may be able to see a scratch on it's surface. If you think your pug has injured their eye, take them to a vet right away.

How do pugs get corneal scratches?

Corneal scratches are a big problem for pugs because of their protruding eyes. Since your pug has a flat face, they don't have room for normal-sized eye sockets, and their eyes bulge outwards from their flat face. Their bulging eyes are part of their charm, but since the eyes stick out, they're vulnerable to damage.

When your pug runs around your home, they could scratch their eyes on items like furniture or clutter. If they play outdoors, they could scratch their eyes on the branches of bushes or other foliage. To protect your pug, try to keep your home clutter-free and keep them on a short leash when you go outdoors.

How are they treated?

Corneal scratches are very painful, so your veterinarian may prescribe painkillers for your pug. Avoid giving your pet human painkillers like aspirin; since your dog is so much smaller than the average adult human, they could overdose if you give them a human dose of medication. Your veterinarian will prescribe the right amount of medication based on your pet's weight.

Since corneal scratches can get infected—resulting in loss of the eye—your dog may also be prescribed an antibiotic eye drop or ointment. Applying eye drops or ointments to a squirming pug can be difficult, so to make it easier for yourself, have a friend or family member hold your pet still while you apply the medication.

If you think your pug has scratched their cornea, take them to a vet immediately for treatment. If your vet isn't currently available, contact an emergency animal hospital like Northside Emergency Pet Clinic. These injuries are painful and may get infected, but with prompt treatment, your pug should be as good as new.

I realized that I didn't have the skills to take care of his illness, so I consulted a professional veterinarian for help. My vet gave him the medicine that he needed, and he also taught me how to care for my sweet little guy.
